response to Nature
I don’t think I have ever seen a water tower perched like this in San Francisco.

Do they have earthquakes in New York City? I suspect not. I find this situation rather thrilling, because it looks so very precarious to me. Doesn’t it seem as if it would tip right off the building if there were a shake? I also wonder what is in the portion of the structure directly under the tank? It looks like a space with walls and openings, but nothing else. It makes me think of a sun-bleached Greek ruin with columns. Maybe there is a fountain in there – supplied with water from the tank. Several statues of goddesses and leaping animals.
The Manhattanville fault tracks 125th Street across Manhattan out to Long Island City. There was a small quake in January, 2001. There was another one about a month after 9/11 but it was centered around 55th Street on the West Side. There was a 4.0 in 1985 north of the city on the Dobbs Ferry Fault in the mid-eighties.
